"5 Corporate mantras that come from children"
As a trainer I find what keeps my programs fresh is 'where' I draw inspiration from. For years I've turned to revered seniors, bosses, peers and juniors. However at times you must turn to the most active learners and the experiences that actually prepare you for life.
So here's revisiting 5 mantras that I recommend you RE-ADOPT to ensure success at work.
5. KIDS NEVER STOP AT 5 WHYS
Kids that ask the most questions, learn the most. Ever known a kid to give up a good puzzle or why is the sky blue after just 2-3 replies? If you can't summarise all you need to know in 5 questions or 'whys' its okay. Ask as many sequential questions at meetings, goal meet-ups, coaching sessions and so on. This will give you clarity on exactly what's expected, what you can achieve and what you stand to learn/gain from the project at hand.
4. PEEKABOO ! !
The element of lighthearted surprise with a fresh smile can really cheer you up. When in a tough discussion, bad moment or midst anxiety , excuse yourself - go to the washroom. Face a mirror. Peekaboo yourself. Do it till you are smiling at just how charming you still are. Go back to your work desk stronger, happier and refreshed.
3. RUNNING AROUND SINGING A FOR APPLE TOPS BEING GLUED TO THE NEWS
If you keep honing your skills instead of indulging in " who did what ??" it will serve you better in the long run. If you want to do more at work, to grow - seek assistance from your L&D team - talk to team managers about mini learning projects to up-skill or cross-skill yourself and peers. This will help you grow laterally / vertically and keep work interesting.
2. SCREAMING FOR M&MS WILL EVENTUALLY GET YOU M&Ms OR ANOTHER CHOCOLATE.
Now this one is extremely simple. As great as our work equations are , you must remember that your boss is incharge of so many things- just like you and can't always be uber-intuitive to your growth needs. Don't hold off asking him/her to help you grow so he/she can grow above you. Don't be coy, proud or emotional about following up on these requested needs either. Remember, the persistent kid always gets her chocolate. Cause no one wants an unhappy kid right ? Exactly , no one wants an unhappy employee. So be vocal, logical and persistent - the science is out there.
1. KIDS THAT KEEP DEMANDING CHOCOLATES, ALWAYS GET FED HEALTHIER MEALS ON TIME TO KEEP THEM SATIATED.
Sounds like a trick ? It is. Go back to your childhood - recollect what happened every time you asked for chocolate - you got fruit, salad, meals and juice instead. ALL healthier options that made you fit weren't they ? Corporate growth is pretty much the same - when you outreach yourself - management will ensure your essential comforts are met on time. It isn't sneaky it's just common sense - healthy competitions lead to thriving work environments.
